Missing Sprites/Items

Submitted by: Rlan

These 6 different items were found when you leave the Special Stage area in Debug mode. You'll find these floating around occasionally. They don't appear to actually DO anything inparticular, but they could possibly be names for each of the zone [Six emeralds equals six different 'zones']

This 'W' is also found in the Special stages in debug, and again, has no purpose. It has been thought that it could have been a 'Warp' to warp to different sections of a special stage.

This life icon is also found in the special stages debug mode, but we know it's original purpose. In the Sonic 1 manuals it mentions that this block gives you a 1-up, but isn't in the final.

This scene exists, but the colour of the font is black to fit with the backdrop. Thanks to Sepiroth, It reads:

Programmer Yuji Naka
Plan Hirowa Yasuhara
Design Naoto Oshima
?????? Rieko Kata
Sound Producer Sho Nakamura
Sound Program Kubota (?)

This small graphic was found when you use Genecyst's tile viewer. It was once used for the title screen, but probably taken away near the end because it was stating the blatantly obvious.

These lights were found in the Star Light Zone data, but not in the final game. They show similar attributes to the lights found in Sonic Crackers.

This ball was used later on as Eggmans weapon in the first level, but was originally used for Sonic to hop onto and ride around on! IN earlier pictures it was shown that Sonic was once able to ride it down hills, possibly to break open walls [which the run+ down did later on]

These 3 small parts of machinery were found in the Star Light Zone data, but don't appear in the final level. They were most likely just backdrop objects rather than obstacles.

Shown in a few prototype photographs, Sonic appeared to strike a pose when he left the screen once you passed the sign. It was probably taken out because it'd look too buggy if you lept over it at the beginning, and was later on replaced by bonus point scores if you hit certain points in the last frame.

These 4 different animation's were found in the final game, and show a striking resemblance to the spindash in Sonic 2, possibly showing that they were going to incorporate it into the final. On the other hand, it may also be a warp movement from the warp tubes in scrap brain zone, something similar to the warps found in Scrap Brain in the Master System version.

These animations show Sonic falling into nothingness from a great height. These doesn't seem to be any place where they really fit in the final, but may have been part of the special stage if you hit a bad bumper.

Submitted by: IceKnight

This animation shows Sonic gasping for air while standing. This must have been used in the Labyrinth zones, but for some unknown reason was unused in the final. Possibly some sprite error was the cause.

A Sliding sprite of Sonic, looks quite similar to the one in Sonic CD's Wacky Workbench Zone.

From Marble Zone, these spikes come from the side rather than the top, and are also thinner than their counterpart.

This set of sprites is the "Vanishing Sonic" movement. This seems to be what Sonic would do when he entered a special stage if he ran past a lamp post. It's very supersonic-y, almost like the time Warp move from Sonic CD

Submitted by: Hivebrain

At one point Eggman would appear and blow up, much like Sonic 1 GG's ending, or the bad ending of Sonic CD. Unfortunately these were never used.

Splats the badnik, seen from the back of a set of Sonic Trading Cards and also made the occasional appearance in the Sonic Archie comic, ended up missing out on the checklist. he would hop around Green Hill Zone.

These two Totem poles are very different to the final ones, they look a lot more basic, and evil. The Palette isn't the correct one however, they don't have one, so they may have been better looking than the evil smiley faces from Super Mario Bros. 2 USA like they look like currently.

These tiles were found in Green Hill Zone's tileset, but are never used. They look a lot like the underground areas of the Master System's Sonic the Hedgehog game, so we can assume Sonic 1 had an underground level section at one point.
