This is an early image of Sonic 3D. Firstly the actual location doesn't in this state, but as a reversal of a section does appear in Green Grove. There is no heads-up display; even for Flickies. Sonic's shadow is a simple circle, where in the final it completely renders his body movement as a shadow. Sonic also just lost all of his rings, but there is no badnik is to be seen, even if he had destroyed it, the rings would have disappeared before Sonic could reach the top of the hill. Lastly, Sonic is off centre. Click the image for a bigger version.

Same as above but reversed to be correct, taken from an article in EGM in 1996

A missing robot in Sonic 3D? A Crab badnik, which looks like "Shell cracker" from Sonic 2, was cut from the final game, and note that he already has a fully rendered shadow, while Sonic has yet to have it implemented. The bridge that Sonic is walking under is not in the final game; you can't even walk under one in the final. Lastly, Sonic already has all 5 Flicky birds, yet the Crab Badnik is still active.

A very different title card sequence for the game was shown in early images, most likely just concept. It looks much like the title cards found in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The final version has a very different font and colour choice. Click the image for a larger version.

"Sonic 3D: E3 Demo" was the first demo of the game avaliable at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. The game simply showed off the first level of the game.

This was the title screen for the game, and is mysteriously different to the final game. It has better colour, a background, and the words "E3 Demo" instead of Blast/Flickie's Island. This may have been a poster of some sort.

The level would follow through Green Grove Zone. Not much at all was changed, other than the icons at the bottom.

At a closer look, you can see the horrible disfigured Flicky and Sonic icons They were represent them, but look like they were place holders until the final game.

Again, same deal. There are also more than 2 flickies floating about, yet two have been recognised.

The only flickies present are the blue ones, probably meaning that the Green, Red and Pink ones were yet to be implemented.

Again, same deal. The enemy seems the same as the final.

There seem to be 3 flickies following Sonic, but only two have been recognised by the game.

The level itself is not much different in this screenshot, but direct your attention to the Sonic and flicky logos on the bottom corners. Both Sonic and the Flickies have been so poorly drawn that they look like they were done in MS Paint. Click the image for a larger version.
